Batswana returning from overseas can import personal vehicles and household goods duty-free under the Transfer of Residence concession. Here are the specific rules for motor vehicles.
Who Qualifies
- Botswana citizens or permanent residents returning after living abroad for 12+ continuous months
- Must provide proof of residence abroad (work permit, lease, utility bills)
- Vehicle must have been owned and used for at least 12 months before return
- Only one vehicle per individual (two per family)
Time Limits
The vehicle must be imported within 6 months of the owner's return to Botswana. Extensions may be granted in exceptional circumstances if applied for in writing to BURS before the 6-month deadline.
Restrictions
- The vehicle cannot be sold within 2 years of duty-free import
- If sold within 2 years, the buyer must pay the full applicable duty
- Right-hand drive (RHD) required
- No age restriction on the vehicle itself
Required Documents
- Valid Botswana passport or Omang
- Proof of residence abroad (12+ months)
- Original vehicle registration book from the country of residence
- Purchase invoice showing date of acquisition
- Bill of Lading or shipping documents
- BURS IC2 Application Form with "Returning Resident" indicated
- Written application for Transfer of Residence concession
Process
- Complete BURS registration (TIN) if you do not already have one
- Submit IC2 form with returning resident application
- Ship vehicle to a Botswana port of entry
- Present all documents at BURS for duty-free assessment
- Register with DRTS for number plates
