How to Register as a Botswana Vehicle Importer — BURS IC2 Guide

July 20255 min read

Before you can import a vehicle into Botswana, you must register with the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) and submit an IC2 Application Form. Here is the complete process.

Step 1: Register with BURS

All importers must obtain a BURS Tax Identification Number (TIN). This applies to both individuals and commercial importers. You can register online via the BURS e-Services portal or in person at any BURS office.

Step 2: Complete the IC2 Application Form

The IC2 form is submitted to BURS Customs and Excise. It declares your intent to import and provides details about the vehicle, including make, model, year, engine number, chassis number, and CIF value.

  • Download the IC2 form from the BURS website or collect from any BURS office
  • Attach a copy of your valid passport or Omang (national ID)
  • Include proforma invoice or purchase contract for the vehicle
  • Submit at least 2 weeks before the vehicle arrives at the border

Step 3: Receive Customs Assessment

BURS will assess the duties and taxes payable based on the vehicle's CIF value and classification. You will receive a Duty Assessment Notice outlining the amount due.

Step 4: Pay Duties and Clear Vehicle

Pay the assessed duties at any BURS-accredited bank or via the e-Services portal. Once payment is confirmed, present your documents at the border (Tlokweng, Kazungula, or Pioneer Gate) for physical clearance.
