Botswana's vehicle import tax system is one of the most favourable in Southern Africa, especially for vehicles sourced from within SACU. Here is the complete breakdown of what you will pay.
SACU Imports: Zero Duty
As a SACU member, Botswana applies zero customs duty on vehicles imported from South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, and Eswatini. This means if you buy a Japan-used vehicle from our Durban stock (South Africa), it enters Botswana duty-free. You only pay 12% VAT on the CIF value.
Non-SACU Imports (Direct from Japan)
| Vehicle Type | Customs Duty (SACU CET) | VAT | Effective Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passenger cars | 18–25% | 12% | ~30–37% of CIF |
| Light commercial | 15–20% | 12% | ~27–32% of CIF |
| Trucks and buses | 5–15% | 12% | ~17–27% of CIF |
Calculation Example: SACU Import
Toyota Corolla 1500cc, CIF value USD 10,000 — purchased from Durban stock:
- Customs duty: 0% (SACU origin)
- VAT: 12% × USD 10,000 = USD 1,200
- Total tax payable: USD 1,200
- Effective tax rate: 12%
Calculation Example: Direct Japan Import
Same vehicle imported directly from Japan to Botswana:
- CIF value: USD 10,000
- Customs duty: 25% × USD 10,000 = USD 2,500
- VAT: 12% × USD 12,500 = USD 1,500
- Total tax payable: USD 4,000
- Effective tax rate: 40% — over 3× more than SACU import
