Eswatini enforces one of the strictest used-vehicle age limits in Southern Africa. Here is exactly how the 15-year rule works and how it affects your import options.
How the Age Limit Works
The vehicle must be no more than 15 years old from its date of first registration. Eswatini Customs calculates this from the registration date on the original title document, not the manufacturing date (though these are usually similar).
Examples
- Vehicle registered in 2010 → can be imported in 2025 (15 years) — OK
- Vehicle registered in 2009 → CANNOT be imported in 2025 (16 years) — rejected
- Vehicle manufactured in 2012 but only registered in 2014 → age calculated from 2014
Impact on Your Import Options
The 15-year limit means:
- You are limited to vehicles from approximately 2010 or newer
- This naturally means higher purchase prices (newer vehicles cost more)
- But it also means better reliability, lower maintenance, and better fuel efficiency
- Popular models: Toyota Corolla (2010+), Honda Fit (2010+), Toyota Hilux (2010+)
- Suzuki Swift and Daihatsu models from 2010+ offer excellent value
Are There Exceptions?
- Classic/collector vehicles 25+ years old may qualify for a special permit
- Diplomatic and military imports are exempt
- Temporary imports (foreign visitors) are exempt for up to 3 months
- Returning residents must still comply with the 15-year limit
Strategic Advice
The 15-year age limit is not necessarily bad news. Newer Japanese vehicles (2010–2020) offer better fuel economy, lower emissions, and modern safety features. They also hold their resale value better in Eswatini's market. Focus on well-maintained Japanese vehicles from the 2012–2018 range for the best balance of price and quality.
