Eswatini Vehicle Import Rules 2025 — Duty Rates, SACU Benefits & Age Limits

July 20257 min read

Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) is a SACU member, which gives it significant advantages for vehicle imports. However, it also has one of the region's strictest age limits. Here is what you need to know.

SACU Benefits for Eswatini Importers

As a SACU member, Eswatini applies zero customs duty on vehicles originating from within SACU (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho). Most of our clients buy Japan-used vehicles from our Durban stock — since the vehicle is physically in South Africa, it qualifies for duty-free entry into Eswatini under SACU rules.

The 15-Year Age Limit

Eswatini imposes a strict age limit on imported used vehicles: the vehicle must be no more than 15 years old at the time of import. This is calculated from the date of first registration to the date of import.

  • A 2010 model can be imported in 2025 (15 years) — just within the limit
  • A 2009 model or older CANNOT be imported for registration
  • The age limit applies to all used vehicles, including those from SACU countries
  • Exceptions may apply for classic/collector vehicles (25+ years) with special permits

Duty on Non-SACU Imports (Direct from Japan)

If you import directly from Japan to Eswatini, SACU Common External Tariff applies:

Vehicle TypeSACU CETVAT
Passenger cars18–25%15%
Light commercial15–20%15%
Trucks5–15%15%
Minibuses0%15%

Import Permit Requirements

Eswatini requires an import permit for all vehicles entering the country. The permit must be obtained BEFORE the vehicle is shipped:

  • Apply to the Eswatini Revenue Authority (ERA) for a vehicle import permit
  • Submit vehicle details, purchase invoice, and proof of identity
  • Pay the permit application fee
  • Processing time: 2–4 weeks
  • The permit is valid for 3 months from date of issue

Registration Process

  • Obtain police clearance for the vehicle (check against stolen vehicle database)
  • Complete roadworthiness inspection at a Vehicle Inspection Station
  • Present ERA customs clearance certificate
  • Pay registration fees and obtain number plates
  • Register with the Eswatini Motor Vehicle Fund (road accident fund)
