How to Calculate Duty on Imported Cars in Eswatini — ERA SACU Guide

July 20265 min readMichelle Reyners

Eswatini's SACU membership simplifies duty for Durban-sourced vehicles, but the 15-year age limit is a critical factor that affects which vehicles qualify.

For SACU-Origin Vehicles (Durban Stock)

Total tax = 15% VAT on the CIF value. No customs duty for SACU-origin vehicles. However, the vehicle must be 15 years or newer from date of first registration.

  • Customs duty: 0% (SACU)
  • VAT: 15% × CIF value
  • Age limit: maximum 15 years old
  • ERA import permit required before shipping

For Non-SACU Imports (Direct from Japan)

Vehicle TypeCustoms DutyVAT
Passenger cars18–25%15%
Light commercial15–20%15%

Worked Example

Mazda Demio 1300cc (2016, 8 years old), CIF = USD 5,500 from Durban:

  • Customs duty: USD 0 (SACU)
  • VAT: 15% × USD 5,500 = USD 825
  • ERA import permit: ~USD 60
  • Police clearance: ~USD 15
  • Roadworthiness inspection: ~USD 25
  • Total tax and fees: USD 925

Age Limit Check

A 2016 vehicle is 8 years old (in 2026) — well within the 15-year limit. Always check the vehicle's year of first registration before purchasing. A 2010 model would be at the 15-year limit and may face complications if registration dates are borderline.
