Landing Cost Used Car Namibia — SACU Benefits & Excise Charges

July 20265 min readMichelle Reyners

Namibia offers favourable import terms as a SACU member, but unique excise duties based on vehicle age make the landed cost calculation different from other SACU countries.

Landed Cost Components

  • Vehicle price (CIF Durban) — for vehicles sourced from South Africa
  • Transport Durban to Namibia — USD 400–800 depending on destination
  • MVIP permit fee — NAD 500–1,500
  • Customs duty — 0% if SACU origin (from Durban stock)
  • Excise duty — 0–37% based on age and engine size
  • VAT — 15% on CIF + excise (if applicable)
  • CO2 levy — variable for newer vehicles

Worked Example: Toyota Corolla 1500cc (2018)

Cost ComponentAmount (USD)
Vehicle price (CIF Durban)$9,000
Transport to Namibia$500
MVIP permit$80
Customs duty (SACU duty-free)$0
Excise duty (5 years old, <2000cc)$0
VAT at 15%$1,350
Total landed cost$10,930

When Excise Applies

For vehicles over 5 years old, excise duty kicks in: 20–22% for 5–8 years, 30–35% for 8–10 years, and 37% for 10+ years. Always check the vehicle's age bracket before purchasing, as an 8-year-old vehicle can add 30% to your tax bill compared to a 4-year-old one.
