Lesotho Pre-Delivery Inspection Explained — What You Need Before Importing

July 20255 min read

Unlike most Southern African countries, Lesotho requires a mandatory pre-delivery inspection (PDI) for all imported used vehicles before they can be registered. Here is everything you need to know.

What Is the Pre-Delivery Inspection?

The PDI is a physical inspection of your vehicle conducted by Lesotho Revenue Authority (LRA) approved inspectors. It verifies that the vehicle is roadworthy and matches its import documentation.

What Is Checked

Inspection PointWhat They Look For
Chassis/VIN numberMatches Bill of Lading and title documents
Engine numberMatches Bill of Lading and title documents
BrakesAdequate pad/disc thickness, no fluid leaks
TyresMinimum 1.6mm tread depth, no structural damage
LightsHeadlights, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights functional
SuspensionNo excessive wear or damage
EmissionsComplies with Lesotho standards
SteeringNo excessive play, power steering functional
Body conditionNo major rust or structural damage

Step-by-Step PDI Process

  • Arrange inspection appointment at an LRA-designated centre
  • Bring the vehicle (or arrange transport if not yet cleared)
  • Present all import documents (Bill of Lading, invoice, title)
  • Inspector completes visual and mechanical checks
  • Receive inspection certificate (valid for 30 days)
  • Present certificate to LRA for final registration clearance

Common PDI Failures and How to Avoid Them

  • VIN/engine number mismatch — verify all documents match before shipping
  • Check engine light on — have it diagnosed and fixed before PDI
  • Worn tyres — budget for replacement if tyres are near the legal limit
  • Brake wear — ensure brakes are in good condition
  • Minor dents and scratches are usually fine unless structural

Cost and Timing

The PDI fee is approximately LSL 300–500 (included in the LRA fee schedule). The inspection itself takes 30–60 minutes. Results are provided immediately — if your vehicle passes, you can proceed to registration. If it fails, you have 14 days to repair and re-inspect.
