Namibia Import Permit Guide: How to Get Your Motor Vehicle Import Permit (MVIP)

The Motor Vehicle Import Permit (MVIP) is a mandatory requirement for importing vehicles into Namibia. Unlike some neighbouring countries, this permit must be obtained BEFORE your vehicle is shipped.

Why You Need an MVIP

The Namibian Transport Commission requires all imported vehicles to have a valid MVIP before they can be cleared at the border or registered for road use. Shipping without an MVIP risks your vehicle being impounded or incurring demurrage charges while you wait for the permit.

Application Process

• Download the MVIP application form from the Transport Commission website or collect from their Windhoek office
• Complete all sections including importer details, vehicle specifications, and shipping information
• Attach certified copies of your passport or Namibian ID
• Include the purchase invoice or proforma from the seller
• Attach proof of residence (if applying as a returning resident)
• Submit the application and pay the processing fee
• Receive your MVIP (processing time: 2–4 weeks)

After You Get the MVIP
